What to expect - FAQ

Do I need a visa to visit South Africa?

No, a visa is not required.

 

Is it safe to travel in South Africa?

Like most countries, the crime rate in the cities and bigger commercial areas is much higher than in the rural areas where we hunt. It is always wise, however, to be cautious and careful. Please feel free to ask us if there are any area’s that you will be visiting that you are not sure of.

 

Do I need a permit to bring in firearms?

You need to declare your rifles at the airport on arrival in South Africa, and also provide proof of ownership. A 6 week permit is issued at point of entry. Before travelling to South Africa however, you will need to fill in a Temporary Firearm Application form, SAP520. This form is to be completed in black ink, and left unsigned until the document is finalized in front of the police official issuing the actual at the airport. You will also need to provide the police official with the following: your passport, airline ticket, proof of ownership, and a Letter of Invitation, which will be provided by us on confirmation of your deposit.

 

When is the best time to travel?

Hunting season in South Africa is mainly between May and October.

 

What will the weather be like?

This is our winter season, so it is advisable to bring as many warm clothes as possible. These should include jackets, warm socks and gloves.

 

Should I change foreign currency on entering the country?

Yes, this can be done at the International airport when you land.

 

Do I need to take any special medical precautions?

Glen Harry is situated in the malaria free Eastern Cape, so no special precautions need to be taken. If you have any medical allergies or special medical conditions, we recommend you bring your own supply of medicines, and also please make us aware of these. We do carry a well stocked First Aid Kit on the vehicle.

 

How do I get to you?

You need to make your travel arrangements as far as Port Elizabeth airport, where we will meet you and transport you to Glen Harry. There are numerous flights to Port Elizabeth from both Oliver Tambo and Cape Town international airports.

 

What does the accommodation consist of?

There are three individual chalets, each sleeping 2 people with a bathroom en-suite. Dining is in a central lapa area, where drinks are also enjoyed around a open campfire.

 

What drinks do we have to pay for?

All local spirits, wine and soft drinks are included in the price, as well as bottled water.

 

What can my wife do if she comes along?

Please let us know if your wife is coming and we can arrange special trips for her.

 

How do the Tips work?

These are made at the discretion of the hunter, but is always appreciated. The average has been between 10 & 15%.

 

How do I get my Trophies home?

All trophies will be prepared and forwarded to a registered taxidermist. We can recommend one if necessary. After deliver to the taxidermist, dipping, shipping, packaging, export documentation, as well as any other charges are the client’s responsibility. The taxidermist handles all export documentation. Because of veterinary restrictions no raw trophy may be exported without being dried or treated. The client will obtain Cites permits, where required, before leaving his home country for a safari.

 

Do I need insurance?

You are required to arrange your own personal travel and all–risk hunting and medical insurance, as no liability can be accepted by Glen Harry, even though all reasonable precautions are taken to ensure your safety during your safari. It is necessary for all clients to sign a personal indemnity before commencement of the safari.
